Fashion is Not the Same Without A Little Competition

As fashionistas know there is always a little competition within the fashion industry. Whenever you read a magazine there are always photographs with celebrities attending a fancy event accompanied with the question, "Who Wore it Better?" so it is only fitting that the competition thing continues to thrive.

Anyone who has been a fan of CityTv must be familiar with one of Canada's television queens, Marilyn Denis. The former host of the lifestyle t.v. show, CityLine for 19 years and co-host of CHUM FM's morning radio show is heading back to the small screen with a brand new show called, The Marilyn Denis Show which she describes as a magazine coming to life.

Now before the show comes to air, the producers are looking for a set of regular on-air contributors to comment on lifestyle, relationships, fitness and FASHION! If you are interested in a career in television and fashion, the on-air contributor could be you! Click here for all the details.

The fun opportunities do not end there! The saucy and stylish channel, CosmoTV is having a Blogger Girl contest to look for a sassy blogger who can also vlog and blog about the hottest places in town, dating and most importantly, FASHION!

The three finalists will fly to Toronto for a luxurious weekend of styling, shopping and a guest appearance on Oh So Cosmo with the winner being the official CosmoTv blog correspondent for Toronto's LG Fashion Week. The contest ends October 15th. Click here for details and have fun!

Enjoy!

Betsey Johnson Heads to the T.O.: LG Fashion Week Wrap Party

Now that Toronto's LG Fashion Week is coming to a close, what better way to celebrate a week of fashion shows, schmoozing and planning your fall 2010 wardrobe?

Tonight head to the Liberty Grand, as fast as your stilettos will allow, to witness a guaranteed fun, colourful and whimsical fashion show by none other than, Betsey Johnson. The former Mademoiselle intern and Andy Warhol buddy will be presenting her (what seems to be) annual fashion show in participation with LG Fashion Week.

Accompanying her show will be DJ sets by Blondish, BP Fallon and British-It model Agyness Deyn! (Who I have a sneaking suspicion will be making an appearance on MTV Canada's The After Show very soon.)

The show begins at 9pm and is located at 25 British Columbia Road near the Exhibition Place. If you would like to purchase tickets click here.

Enjoy and I assure you that this is no April Fools Day joke!

Luck be a Lady: LG Fashion Week Round Up! Part Deux

Nada, Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh weren't the only clothing lines that seemed to pick up the feminine and elegant memo for their spring 2010 collections. New York-based bridal wear designer, Romona Keveza, David Dixon and Project Runway Canada runner-up Jason Meyers each seemed to have a lady in mind when designing their springtime collections.

-From personal experience, I know that Romona Keveza is a woman that knows what she wants and always follow her instincts when it comes to her designs and boy does it pay off! Primarily known as a bridal wear designer, Romona Keveza has designed countless elegant, gorgeous wedding dresses (and recently evening dresses) that can make any woman feel absolutely beautiful. As a former intern in her design studio, I often spent days burried in her dresses and loved every minute of it. A Romona Keveza dress is not only a beautiful dress but a dress that has something special. Making her debut at LG Fashion Week, Romona Keveza did not disappoint. Showing a collection filled with her signature pieces such as the belted waist, sweet heart neckline and the silk satin fabric. My favourite looks from this collection include the gorgeous chratreuse one shouldered gown pictured above and the ruffled skirt cocktail wedding dress. Kudos to Romona!

-David Dixon apparently had yellow on the brain for his vision of spring 2010. His collection was filled with cocktail dresses in cream, bright yellow and black and evening gowns in bright blue, cream and yellow each adorned with a varied collection of embellishments. Several separates added a dose of glamour to the classic look including, a yellow belted ruffled coat with a black skirt and cream blazer reminiscent of Dior's New Look paired with a black and grey patterned skirt. My favourite part of this collection would have to be the colourful cocktail dresses, the cream and yellow grecian-inspired embellished draped dresses and the general ooozing of GLAMOUR!

-Jason Meyers was fresh and sassy with his spring 2010 collection filled with hot, sexy caged heels, plenty of leg, ruffles and a good dose of white. If you are in search of a fun party dress once the temperature rises, look no further, Jason Meyers has it cut out for you with his asymmetrical blue-grey and white fitted dress and soft pink dress with a bubble hem and sweetheart neckline. However it is the softer, understated looks that really caught my eye. The white shirt dress to the left, seems to be a warm weather staple that is showing no sign of slowing down and a simple white dress paired with a soft grey cardigan is a casual look that every girl should have in her wardrobe. Another favourite is the silk skinny pants worn with a slightly unbuttoned white collared shirt. This is one of my favourite looks of all time for it is absolutely classic, ladylike and sexy all at once. Meow!

LG Fashion Week Round Up!: Numero Uno

So now the famous LG Fashion Week has come to a close and may I say that this fashion week had to have been my favourite thus far! In addition to a new venue, increased (and deserved) exposure, the designers pulled out their very best. Each collection took a risk in it's own right and made something that was truly memorable. Elegance, romance and modernity sums LG Fashion Week Spring 2010 for me. What about you? Check out some of the loveliest looks for the warm season.
-Nada Sheppard is always one to take a calculated risk when it comes to her designs. Her clothing always show women in a strong, powerful way that screams glamour. From her Dynasty-inspired collection from a few seasons back, to her Utopian leather dominatrix looks of Fall 2009, Nada never forgets to show that a strong woman knows how to dress and her Spring 2010 line is no exception. Filled with painted lace and perforated leather, the collection that aims to express, in her words, "infatuation" did just that with bouffant hairstyle and sexy pencil skirts. Despite the strong looks, the collection also had an element of soft Romanticism with touches of silver and lavender.

-Kimberley Newport-Mimran. Now she does she know style or does she know style? Her spring 2010 collection was nautical, sophisticated and defined city chic! Black and white stripes dominated the runway appearing on fitted mini skirts, wrap dresses with exaggerated shoulders and open cardigans. Sequins added shine to pants and boleros, showing that just because the temperature is rising, it doesn't mean you have to put away the shine. The models made their way down the catwalk with that oh-so-cool fashion attitude with loose hair and a subtle red pout. In the Pink Tartan world chic is the name and fashion is the game!

-Joe Fresh Style is slowly, if not already, becoming Canada's go to spot for affordable and irresistibly stylish pieces. Being the most anticipated show of LG Fashion Week for the past 3 years, the Joe Fresh show made a statement with underwear being worn as outerwear. Theodora Richards daughter of rock legend, Keith Richards kicked off the show filled with, as Mr. Mimran himself describes "transparency". Sheer blouses and skirts in nudes, creams, yellows and pinks pranced along the runway creating a soft, clean look for spring. One of my items were the white clogs and loafers as well as diaphonous pink skirt. For one who does not wear running shoes and finds flats terribly uncomfortable, these are a chic, fresh approach to the famous flat and the floaty pink skirt will bring out the inner ballerina in all of us.

Stay tuned for LG Fashion Week Part Deux!

Kimberley Newport-Mimiran stayed true to her impeccable style and featured a delicate cream floral dress with a gold chain statement necklace while Monsieur Gagnon took a structured approach to leather jackets.

The September Issue Comes Up North

The september issue of any fashion magazine, as we all know, is the most coveted issue of the year. What other month's issue is an inch thick filled with photos of chunky knits, tall boots and jewel tones, assisted by hundreds of tips of how to put it all together? Does any other issue inspire you more? Does any other issue have you dreaming of walking on a crisp fall day, smack dab in the middle of a fashionable land where peacoats, leather jackets and fur vests rule?

Canadian fashionistas (and fashionmistas) it is time to rejoice! The much-talked about fashion documentary, The September Issue is about to come up North! On Friday, October 23rd, 2009 none the less, the last day of LG Fashion Week. What better way to end a week at the catwalk?

Finally, we Canadian fashion lovers can really see what's like to translate the favoured fall fashion season onto print. For a sneak preview, click here for the trailer and here for show times.

LG Fashion Week is Making Some Ch-Ch-Changes!

Last Spring, L'Oreal Fashion Week became LG Fashion Week Beauty by L'Oreal Paris and introduced showroom presentations. For the upcoming presentation of the spring collections, Toronto's fashion week also has no shortage of alterations.

1) The tents will no longer be at Nathans Phillips Square. Where is this new location? 1030 King Street West, just east of Ossington Avenue. This new space will include a permanent structure as well as the traditional tents.

2) Many of the designers that had shows in past years, will not be debuting their spring designs this season. The list includes fashion week regulars, Zoran Dobric, Aqua Di Lara and Joeffer Coac.

3) On the bright side, that makes way for many new designers to show what they got! This includes, the very talented New York based designer, Romona Keveza, Project Runway runner-up Jessica Biffi and Stephen Frame and Yasmin Mahrous of the clothing line, Frame.

4) OCAD is the school of choice for this season and will be presenting their clothing in a practical and literal fashion. This presentation will be taking place at OCAD on 100 McCaul Street and admission is free!

5) Toronto-based clothing line, JUMA are the new guest contributors of the LG Fashion Week Beauty by L'Oreal Paris blog! They will be providing all their insights about fashion and their clothing line.

A Day in the life of a Toronto Fashionista......

Ever wondered what it would be like to volunteer for LG Fashion Week? Read ahead to find out!

As a budding fashionista and proud Canadian, one can only imagine my excitement when I got the opportunity to volunteer at LG Fashion Week (formerly known as L’Oreal Fashion Week). It was February 2008 and I had been looking forward to the possibility of attending Canada’s premiere fashion event. Toronto’s fashion week was originated by the FDCC, an acronym for the Fashion Design Council of Canada, as a way to garner publicity and attention for Canada’s fashionably elite. LG Fashion Week aims to put Canadian fashion designers on the map and it has does an incredible job. Attracting the likes of Jeanne Bekker, Joseph Mimran, Nada Shephard and Shawn Husein, LG Fashion Week has definitely made itself the place to be for all things Canadian fashion.

I had so been looking forward to being a part of Toronto Fashion Week. I remember spending my Valentine’s Day sitting in front of the computer typing up my application to volunteer. I guess most people were celebrating the day of love with their sweethearts, but I felt my love for all things fashion satisfied me more. Passing up the opportunity to volunteer for LG Fashion Week was not possibility to me. The platform that it had created for Canada’s top fashion designers is something that had been very inspiring to me. Unfortunately, the last thing that Canada is known for is fashion and LG Fashion Week along with the FDCC assist with this by putting our Canadian talent on the map. It is events like this that make me realize why I love the fashion industry and why it is so important to support home grown talent.

It was now a grey February morning and as I followed with my daily routine of checking my e-mail, I saw an unread message and it was from none other than the FDCC! I opened the message and it was my volunteer schedule. I was to monitor the Fashion Environment and report to duty the very next day. The excitement bubbled up inside of me as I fantasized about all the fabulous clothes I would be able to see, the industry insiders I would be assisting and the gorgeous models strutting down the Canadian catwalk.

On my first day I helped with the set up the runway and main fashion environment at Nathan Phillips Square. I hustled down to the FDCC to package gift bags and assist with model fittings and got the chance to speak with one of the gorgeous models. It was a long day but definitely well worth it. After all, I was taking part in the hippest fashion event in town.

Finally the shows began. I fulfilled my duty as a LG Fashion Week volunteer that was to monitor the Fashion Environment. I picked garbage off of the floor, greeted guests and made sure the event ran smoothly. In between each of my tasks I couldn’t help but admire all the fashionable people that surrounded me. Toronto’s hottest fashionistas carried Gucci bags, wore the sleekest Louboutins and exuded style with their Prada sunglasses. The likes of Eva Avila, Stacey McKenzie and Iman mingled during the event and I could not believe that I was a part of it! Each fashion show played on a jumbo screen and I was able to watch Project Runway Canada winner Evan Bidell’s first fashion show. With all the fashion, excitement and fabulousness I was excited, overwhelmed and inspired all at the same time. Being a part of this made me realize that not only did I love the fashion industry but I belonged in it and the fact that this amazing event was held right in my hometown made me think, Oh Canada!

L’Oréal Fashion Week Spring 2009 Preview-NADA

Fabulous was the theme for L’Oréal Fashion Week’s spring collections and when it came to Nada, it was fabulous indeed. Being inspired by Athena, the Greek goddess of war, models strut down the runway wearing everything from a gold cocktail dress adorned with metal coins, high-waist grey pleated harem pants and a flowing belted magenta tent dress. The show was styled by former Fashion Magazine editor, Tammy Eckenswiller who brought a modern eclectic touch to the Grecian inspired designs. By styling the outfits with stacks of chunky gold bangles, cocktail rings and ornate chandelier earrings, the designer looks were ready to be worn right off the runway. Nada is known for taking inspiration from prominent women throughout history such as, Alexis Carrington from the 1980’s power soap opera, Dynasty and her spring 2009 collection did not disappoint. The collection included a colour palette of olive green, magenta, purple, white and gold. The clothing was mainly made up of sinuous silk and jersey skirts and dresses that were contrasted with braided shoulder straps and brown leather belts. A soft grey spaghetti-strap tank top paired with a high-waist white flowing skirt with a braided sash belt would be a perfect look for prancing around town on a summer day and for anyone who wants to show off their tough side, just slip into a pair of the distressed leather pants that were paired with a sleeveless top embellished with gold metal coins. Nada Shephard has once again brought out the strong, sexy woman in all of us with her spring 2009 collection and will no doubt continue to dazzle L’Oréal Fashion Week in the years to come.

Artistic Disposition: The Future Face of Canadian Fashion

I first met fashion designer, Zoran Dobric this past summer while helping him with a small marketing assignment for an upcoming trade show. My first impression of him was that he was soft spoken and down to earth. As I got to know him better I realized that he had the fire inside him to succeed in the fashion industry. A fire that unfortunately is very dim in the Canadian fashion industry, with successful Canadian retailers such as The Hudson’s Bay Company being bought out by American retailer, Lord& Taylor. “It is unfortunate that this is happening as many jobs in Canada are lost that way”, says Dobric. However, when it comes to his designs, he remains optimistic, “this will not influence my work.”

Born in the former Yugoslavia, Canadian-based fashion designer, Zoran Dobric has known that he wanted to become a fashion designer from a young boy where he was, “always drawing pretty princesses in fancy dresses”. Since then, Dobric has gone on to winning first prize for the Art of Fashion: Hollywood-Rethink Breast Cancer Competition and Smirnoff Fashion Awards-Virtual Nature 1999 Competition. Having worked in the fashion industry since 1999 and participating in Toronto’s LG Fashion Week (formerly L’Oréal Fashion Week) for the past three years, Zoran continues to intrigue the fashion industry with his contemporary designs featuring abstract graphic prints that he creates himself, “I start with a hand drawing or painting, and then manipulate them in Photoshop or [Adobe] Illustrator in order to create the final print which then can be digitally printed on fabric.”

His Spring/Summer 2009 collection was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s semi-biographical story, Orlando and featured a colour palette of soft greys, pea greens and sky blues with a shot of black. The silhouettes were inspired by the many time periods that the immortal, Orlando travels through while transitioning from a man to a woman. A women’s leather bomber jacket with a nipped in waist paired with grey and white striped pants, resembled a 17th century doublet popular during the Baroque period. When describing why the gender themed novel inspired him, Dobric says, “The fact this person was immortal. I was able to borrow different historical references and inspirations, as well as the idea of androgyny, where I could combine masculine and feminine elements that were inspired by the fact that Orlando started out as a male and later turned into a female by the end of the story. It’s a really intriguing story.”

Dobric’s unique designs have become more wearable as the years have gone by, through focusing more on what the everyday man or woman would wear rather than his previous more avant-garde designs. A men’s turtleneck with a cable knit neck and sleeve attached to a chiffon bodice from his spring 2006 collection is now replaced by a short sleeved collared shirt, decorated with a gradated print the goes from pea green to grey. Even though Dobric’s style has evolved, the artistic inspiration in his clothing designs is always there. “I think fashion is a form of art or least an applied art. I would think art is what inspires me to design fashion” describes Zoran, when asked what influences his overall design aesthetic. Being European is another influence in his fashion designs, “it affects my aesthetic since I always lean towards European fashion style more than American style.” The hands-on designer has experienced success on both a national and international level. Most recently he participated in New York’s prestigious, “The Train” trade show in which he experienced great success through receiving sales orders from New York, Boston, San Francisco and Hong Kong. “The experience was great for learning about buyers and how they work. I got sales orders which will help move my business forward.”

With the recent economic recession in the United States and realities of global warming, consumers are becoming more aware of what they are purchasing and more conservative with their purchase decisions. In fact, according to a June 18, 2007 editorial by Footwear News, author Jennifer Carofano states that 27% of consumers are interested in purchasing green products. The fashion industry is no exception to these changing times and according to Dobric, “the buyers are clearly more ‘safe’ when buying then before.” The economic recession has also had an effect on fashion buyers purchase decisions, Dobric says, “It makes it hard for newer brands, as buyers go for old, tried brands. This means that new designers, including me have to emphasize uniqueness and quality of their products even more, in order to remain competitive. It also means that their offerings need to be a pretty safe sale, buyers don’t want too much risk at this time.”

Dobric’s experience in the fashion industry includes, previously teaching at Ryerson University and currently teaching at George Brown College on top of designing his own fashion line and this multitasking gives him what it needs to succeed even further in the fashion industry. His name is continuously growing with appearances in Lou Lou Magazine, Fashion Television and NOW Magazine. With his focus on success and innovative design, Dobric has what it takes to become the face of Canadian fashion. Citing creativity as to why he loves the fashion industry as “there is always something new”, he continues to have high hopes for the future of his fashion line. When asked what direction he sees his fashion collection taking in the next 10 years, Dobric answered, “I am hoping the sales will grow and I will be able to continue designing” As for fashion trends, in the future Dobric feels fashion will continue to take inspiration from the past. “It will probably be something repeated from what was done before. I don’t anticipate nothing too radical.”

The former art high school student will be participating in the second annual Green Gala in Toronto on November 8th where he will be required to create three outfits made out of sustainable fabric. The environment friendly event is on par with a critical world issue as well as a current trend that is on its way to becoming the norm in the fashion industry and this fits perfectly with Dobric, who is definitely here to stay. In regards to the other future of fashion, which includes fashion students, interns and aspiring fashion designers, Dobric has this advice, “the best advice is either do it properly or do not do it at all. You need to invest a lot of time, effort, research and money into something in order to make it even begin to work, so persistence and believing in yourself is the most important thing.”
